  • Strength is a blur radius in pixels. Detail preservation decides how much of the original is blended back where local contrast is high.
  • Use the lowest strength that kills the speckle - a large radius turns skin, hair, and fabric into plastic.
  • Raise detail preservation if edges start to smear; lower it if grain is still visible in flat areas.

It runs a separable box blur (one horizontal pass, one vertical pass) and then blends the original pixels back in wherever local contrast is high, controlled by the detail-preservation slider. That is a classical edge-preserving smoothing filter written in JavaScript - there is no neural network involved and no AI model is downloaded.
Yes, some. A smoothing filter cannot tell grain from texture, it can only tell flat from edgy. Detail preservation protects strong edges; fine low-contrast texture is always the first thing to go.
It averages all three colour channels the same way, so coloured speckle is reduced along with luminance grain. It does not treat chroma separately the way a dedicated raw converter would.
