Apple enabled HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) as the default format starting with iOS 11 because it produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPG while maintaining the same quality.
There is a small quality loss since JPG is a lossy format, but at 85-90% quality the difference is imperceptible to the human eye.
This tool converts the still image portion of the HEIC file. The Live Photo video component is stored separately and is not included in the conversion.
